Typhoon Repair Updates


Update: September 1, 2014

Dulag, Leyte: Roof is complete, along with soffits. Ceiling is not yet painted

Lawaan, Eastern Samar: Believers from Lawaan celebrated their church anniversary on August 31 in their newly finished and painted building.  are rejoicing that their church seating area is now doubled. With an attendance often reaching 200, they will likely need to begin a second worship service.

Osmena Disctrict, Marabut, Samar. Construction is 100% completed. The interior has been beautifully painted by Pastor Mike Baltazar.

Palo, Leyte: Roof is 100% finished.  Interior wall construction is completed. Interior doors are not yet installed.  Lights have not been rewired.

San Jose District, Tacloban City: Church has new paint outside, with roof, ceiling and lights installed, soffits not yet installed.

Tacloban City Downtown: Project is 100% complete, with new roofing panels installed.

Tanauan, Leyte: Project is 100% complete.  The auditorium has been expanded by removing the front porch, and a new steel grillwork front door has been installed to make the building secure, yet allow air flow.

Palo, Leyte Roof is 100% finished.  Interior wall construction is completed, except for doorways on both sides of the platform.

San Jose District, Tacloban City Old purlins have been replaced and most of the new roof is almost finished. Ceiling, gutters, soffits, and electrical work have not yet been started.

Tanauan, Leyte Church is complete. Allene and I attended church and marveled how the new white roofing panels make the church so much cooler than the galvanized roofing panels commonly used here in the Philippines. Update: January 15, 2014 International and private relief organizations are distributing food and tents in the area devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.  Leyte Baptist Hospital and other medical organizations are continuing to conduct medical clinics. ABWE continues to be sensitive to areas without adequate food, but is moving beyond relief to the restoration phase of our work. ABWE Project office volunteers Dave Manore and Mark Wagner have completed a survey of 8 churches. These churches have been inspected for structural damage, and a plan of reconstruction has been completed for each church.  These churches are located at: Tanauan, Leyte San Jose District, Tacloban City Lawaan, Eastern Samar Osmena Disctrict, Marabut, Samar Dulongan District, Basey, Samar Palo, Leyte Burauen, Leyte Dulag, Leyte Tanauan, Leyte: Pastor Joel Peña and his family narrowly escaped drowning in the 15 foot waves. Their house and its contents were destroyed. They are living in a temporary structure on land owned by Mrs. Peña’s parents. The church building lost its roof and contents. Pastor Peña is evangelizing in the surrounding community. San Jose District, Tacloban City: The church lost half of its roof and most of the contents of its building. Most members’ homes were severely damaged. The church is meeting in the building and members are distributing relief goods to the surrounding community.  They are planning a special evangelistic youth outreach January 18. Lawaan, Eastern Samar: Pastor Jun Romawac was in the building during the typhoon and narrowly escaped death. 80% of the roof was removed, and also the front and back walls of the church. The homes of most church members were severely damaged. Church members are ministering to the surrounding community.  Pastor Jun has helped 10 church families to cover their houses with tarps donated from the Phil
